Bruichladdich Launches The Regeneration Project

Bruichladdich The Regeneration Project

Bruichladdich has launched The Regeneration Project, the world’s first Islay Rye Whisky and the third release in a series of small-batch experiments taken from the inner workings of Head Distiller Adam Hannett’s sample room.

Why is Bruichladdich experimenting with rye? Rye is a beneficial crop which replaces essential nutrients which barley removes from the land. It not only improves soil health, but reduces the need for artificial input – keeping costs down for the farmer while being more environmentally friendly. However, with no market for Scottish grown rye, farmers historically wouldn’t grow it. By offering to buy the rye from farmers, Bruichladdich was able to create a rye whisky while simultaneously supporting vital agricultural community on Islay, helping the environment and promoting soil health.

Bruichladdich The Regeneration Project was created from 55% Islay grown Rye and 45% Islay grown malted barley harvested from Coull farm and distilled at Bruichladdich in 2017. Matured for 5 years in first fill bourbon casks and first fill American virgin oak casks, The Regeneration Project is bottled non-chill filtered and coloring free at 50% ABV.

The Regeneration Project is described as having aromas of “rye spice, liquorice, black pepper, cinnamon, nutmeg, a resinous freshness, chocolate limes, maritime notes of the ocean and warm sand, and delicate citrus and honey.” The palate exhibits notes of “marzipan, vanilla, chocolate, rye spice, and citrus green fruit notes.” It concludes with “delicate floral and fruity character, sweet rich oak, ripe pear, green apple, malty pastry, and vanilla custard” on the finish.

Bruichladdich The Regeneration Project is limited to 1,800 bottles and is available exclusively via the Bruichladdich website at a price of £125.00 for a 700 mL bottle.
