Port Charlotte SC: 01 2012

Bruichladdich has launched Port Charlotte SC: 01 2012, the latest release in their Cask Exploration series and successor to last year’s Port Charlotte PAC: 01 2011.

Distilled in 2012 from a 2011 crop of 100% Islay grown Concerto, Publican, and Oxbridge barley varieties and peated to 40 PPM (parts per million), Port Charlotte SC: 01 2012 was created from three parcels of heavily peated spirit aged for nine years. The first parcel contained spirit matured in Sherry butts recasked into first fill Sauternes casks. The second parcel contained spirit matured in second fill American whiskey barrels recasked into second fill Sauternes casks. The third parcel contained spirit matured in a combination of first and second fill American whiskey barrels recasked into first fill Sauternes casks.

Bruichladdich’s official tasting notes for Port Charlotte SC: 01 2012 follow:

Nose – Sweet, stone fruit and a delicate floral perfume on the nose. Hints of smoke come with time. Initially peaches in syrup, dried apricots, honeyed melon and ripe pineapple. Brown sugar, vanilla-fudge, caramel and marzipan. Heady notes of honeysuckle and heather weave through the sweet ripe fruit notes. Peat smoke and warm toasted oak come through with a little time to bring depth and complexity to the dram.

Palate – On the palate, the warmth and supple texture of this dram elegantly grace the palate and bring together a balance of light peat smoke and ripe fruit. Another sip confirms both the beautiful viscosity and depth of flavour as beneath the delicate smoke comes earthy notes of leather and boot polish. The oak brings strength and sweet vanilla, chocolate and citrus to compliment the waves of fruit from the spirit.

Finish – A dram you wish would last forever, the wonderful marine minerality and earthy peat smoke linger on the palate with a citrus tang.

Port Charlotte SC: 01 2012 is bottled NCF (non chill-filtered) and coloring free at a cask strength of 55.2% ABV and will be available at retail stores in the coming months.
