Compass Box Announces Ultramarine Blended Scotch Whisky

Compass Box has announced Ultramarine Blended Scotch Whisky, the first release in the Extinct Blends Quartet. The limited edition series will pay homage to certain styles of Scotch from the past, reflecting the production methods and philosophies that prevailed in Scotland during specific eras.
Compass Box Ultramarine takes its inspiration from the antique Sherry and pipe tobacco notes of a deluxe blended Scotch, first released in the late 1980s.
The recipe for Compass Box Ultramarine follows:
- Caol Ila single malt matured in a Refill Bourbon Barrel (18.7%)
- Glendullan single malt matured in a First Fill Sherry-Seasoned Butt (15.6%)
- Speyburn single malt matured in a Refill Hogshead (4.8%)
- Glen Ord single malt matured in a First Fill Sherry Butt (4.2%)
- Miltonduff single malt matured in a Recharred Hogshead (1.9%)
- Girvan single grain matured in a First Fill Bourbon Barrel (17.2%)
- Cameronbridge single grain matured in a Recharred Hogshead (6%)
- Blended Grain Parcel matured in a Refill Bourbon Barrel (10.8%)
- Blended Malt Parcel matured in a Refill Sherry Butt (9%)
- Blended Scotch Parcel matured in a Refill Sherry Butt (3.9%)
- Highland Malt Blend matured in a Custom French Oak Cask – Heavy Toast (7.9%)
Bottled non chill-filtered and of natural color at 51% ABV, Compass Box Ultramarine is described as having aromas of “toffee, vanilla, and toasted oak, with impressions of a peaty malt kiln.” The palate has notes of “leathery dried mango, peat, roasted pecan, and raisin,” concluding with a “nuttier, spicier, and smokier direction” on the finish.
Limited to 5,430 bottles worldwide, Compass Box Ultramarine will arrive in stores in October and carries a suggested retail price of $375.
