Lochlea Distillery Launches Inaugural Single Malt

Independently owned Ayrshire distillery Lochlea has announced the launch of its inaugural whisky, Lochlea First Release.
Planning for Lochlea Distillery – based on the Ayrshire farm which was Scottish poet and lyricist Robert Burns’ home and workplace from 1777 to 1784 – started in 2014, taking four years to complete. Lochlea Distillery began distilling, casking, and maturing their whisky in August 2018 utilizing their own barley and natural water resources to ensure full traceability from field to cask.
Lochlea First Release was matured in first-fill Bourbon and Pedro Ximenez Sherry casks and is bottled non-chill filtered and with no added color at 46% ABV.
Lochlea First Release is described as having aromas of “fresh orchard fruit, apple, zesty orange, and pear drops, with some brown sugar, toffee, and vanilla fudge in the background.” The palate is “rich and sweet,” with notes of “burnt caramel, hazelnuts, stewed fruit, and some toasted oats, cinnamon, and clove.” The finish is “medium mouth coating, holding on to that fresh fruit, cereal sweetness, and gentle spice.”
Lochlea First Release goes on sale today and will be available in the UK and 10 export markets. It carries a suggested retail price of £50.
