Buffalo Trace Distillery Announces Daniel Weller Spelt Wheat

Buffalo Trace Distillery has announced the launch of Daniel Weller Spelt Wheat, the second release in its experimental Daniel Weller line.
Spelt wheat is an ancient grain rarely used in whiskey production. It was cultivated for thousands of years primarily in Europe, and is closely associated with traditional, small-scale grain farming and artisanal baking.
Daniel Weller Spelt Wheat is a 10 year old, 94 proof (47% ABV), grain-focused experiment that uses spelt wheat in place of rye as the secondary grain, emphasizing the wheat’s subtle sweetness, nuttiness, and aromatic contribution.
Daniel Weller Spelt Wheat is described as having a nose that is “biscuit-forward and nutty, with notes of clove, cinnamon, nutmeg, baked cookie, caramel, and light fruit.” The palate exhibits “layered dried fruit, gentle sweetness, and baking spice with restrained floral and tea-like notes.” The finish is “long and composed, with soft fruit, nuttiness, and fading spice.”
Daniel Weller Spelt Wheat is packaged in a clear 750 mL glass bottle with a unique compass stopper. In homage to Daniel Weller, the coordinates of his farm near Botland, Kentucky, are inscribed beneath the stopper.
Daniel Weller Spelt Wheat will be available in limited quantities across the U.S. beginning this month at a suggested retail price of $549.99.
