Blue Run Spirits Announces Trifecta
Blue Run Spirits has announced Trifecta – the company’s first three-age Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey.
Blue Run Trifecta starts with a base of six year old whiskey, which makes up less than half of the blend. To add additional depth and character, Blue Run Whiskey Director Shaylyn Gammon blends that with whiskeys aged for eight and nine years in the upper reaches of their respective rickhouses. These barrels experienced the highest temperatures the warehouse has to offer due to their position at the top, which in turn extracts more of the components of the wood from the barrel. The older barrels add the desired layers of complexity without overpowering the base whiskey, while the six year old whiskey helps balance the spiciness of the older barrels.
The mash bills and blend ratios are:
- 9 year old: 78% yellow corn, 10% rye, 12% malted barley (32% of blend)
- 8 year old: 75% yellow corn, 21% rye, 4% malted barley (22% of blend)
- 6 year old: 78% yellow corn, 12% rye, 10% malted barley (46% of blend)
Bottled at 117.1 proof (58.55% ABV), Blue Run Trifecta is described as having aromas of “unsalted brown butter, French vanilla cream, warm dark brown sugar and cinnamon, spicy pepper, juicy hints of figs, and dehydrated apples.” The palate is “silky” with “cinnamon spice-dusted candied apple, baked bread, caramel, peppermint, white chocolate, and balanced wood char.” It concludes with “warm vanilla and weathered oak” on a “medium finish.”
For this release, Blue Run’s signature butterfly medallion on the bottle is pewter, an alloy made from three separate metals, which serves as a nod to the three separate aged whiskeys in Trifecta.
