Westland Announces Solum 1st Edition

Westland Outpost Range Solum 1st Edition

Westland has announced the next release in their limited edition Outpost Range: Westland Solum American Single Malt 1st Edition, the first nationally available single malt whiskey to showcase American peated malt.

Solum Edition 1 was distilled from American peated malt sourced from Washington’s Skagit Valley Malting, fermented for 96-144 hours with Belgian Saison Brewer’s Yeast, and matured in Cooper’s Reserve New American Oak, Cooper’s Select New American Oak, and First Fill ex-Bourbon casks.

The peat was harvested from a bog approximately two hours south of Seattle, retrieved from below the bog’s waterline rather than first draining and excavating the bog. This harvesting process was specifically designed to not disrupt the bog’s ecosystem, preventing the release of greenhouse gasses and ensuring that the bog will be able to continue producing peat into the future.

Solum Edition 1 is described as having aromas of “fresh fuji apple, ground cinnamon, charred wood, strawberry rhubarb crisp, and a savory smoke note,” with “complex herbal tones such as burned sage, vanilla chamomile tea, and grain notes of coffee cake and pumpernickel toast” on the palate.

Bottled at 50% ABV, Westland Solum 1st Edition will be available globally beginning this month and is limited to 4,044 bottles. It carries a suggested retail price of $149.99 for a 700 mL bottle.

The Westland Outpost Range features three limited edition expressions that are released annually — Garryana, Colere, and Solum American Single Malt Whiskies.
