Compass Box Names Angela D’Orazio New Creative Director of Whiskymaking
Compass Box Whisky has announced the appointment of Angela D’Orazio as Creative Director of Whiskymaking.
D’Orazio brings nearly three decades of experience to Compass Box and has trained with Glenmorangie, Morrison Bowmore, William Grant, and Bruichladdich, where she credits Jim McEwan as a mentor. She served as Master Blender and Chief Nose Officer at Mackmyra for 17 years, where she helped define the modern profile of Scandinavian whisky. Her accomplishments include Sweden’s first smoky whisky, pioneering finishes such as Calvados and cloudberry wine, and co-developing the world’s first AI-designed whisky.
D’Orazio is also a longtime member and Head Chair of the Swedish Spirits Academy, a judge at global spirits competitions including IWSC, ISC, and the World Whiskies Awards, and was named a World Whiskies Awards ‘Whisky Legend’ and inducted into the Whisky Hall of Fame in 2019.
In her new role, D’Orazio will work closely with a team that includes whiskymakers Michael Stephenson and Samuel Travers. Separately, James Saxon, Director of Whiskymaking, has chosen to pursue a new career path outside of whiskymaking after six years with Compass Box.
