Barrell Craft Spirits Launches Barrell Full Proof Bourbon
Barrell Craft Spirits (BCS) has announced the launch of Barrell Full Proof, its first full proof bourbon blend.
While cask strength bourbon is bottled at the proof it is when it leaves the barrel, full proof bourbon is bottled at the same proof as when it first entered the barrel. To create Barrell Full Proof, the BCS blending team selected individual barrels and cut each one to its original barrel entry proof, then carefully blended them to harmonize their distinct elements.
The first release of Barrell Full Proof features straight bourbon whiskeys from Indiana (16 and 18 year), Tennessee (16 and 17 year), and Kentucky (11 and 20 year) which were blended and bottled at 123 proof (61.5% ABV), resulting in a derived mash bill of 78% corn, 11% rye, and 11% malted barley.
Official tasting notes for Barrell Full Proof Bourbon follow:
Nose: The barrel is front and center, with a very direct aroma of wood jumping out first. It’s the grain that brings the complexity, contributing tobacco, black peppercorn, and patchouli. Grilled mushroom, lanolin, and leather showcase rye’s savory side. There’s just a hint of fruit, notably rhubarb, raisins, and pineapple.
Palate: Quite complex with hazelnut latte and autumn leaves rounding out the flavor of an old oloroso sherry. The tobacco from the nose reappears alongside chocolate nonpareils and a touch of gunpowder. Warm cola brings a syrupy richness to a texture enhanced by sandy tannins and an oily quality that reinforces a note of bacon.
Finish: Purple plum and apple cider mark an unexpected fruity turn. They’re joined by sage, peppermint, and a bit of cigar ash which ultimately give way to the lingering flavor of pastis.
